Prime Minister Pahor at formal session of the Ljubljana University Senate

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, today attended a formal session of the academic senate of the University of Ljubljana as keynote speaker. In this context, he expressed his personal view and the Government’s advocacy of the autonomy of the university, which would be enhanced by the university’s exclusion from the public sector wage system, although this was, in his opinion, a matter to be agreed between social partners.

On this occasion, he welcomed the new university bill, which was prepared with the assistance of universities and which touches upon the wage system as well. Prime Minister Pahor emphasised that a gradual approach should be considered until a final alternative emerges.

Prime Minister Pahor also pointed to a number of other solutions presented in the bill that would contribute to the improved quality of universities and institutions of higher learning in the Republic of Slovenia, since this is essential for better scientific and research results. The Prime Minister encouraged cooperation on the part of all Slovenian universities and the Academy of Science and Arts in order to reach this goal. He underlined that, at this time and place, the country needs the knowledge and wisdom of all individuals more than ever, since our involvement in this globalised world demands this, as does Slovenia, a country which, owing to its small size, cannot play a leading role in such a world but can apply its creative potential and knowledge to adapt to it successfully.
