The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Mr Borut Pahor, today paid his first official visit to London, where he had a meeting with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Mr Gordon Brown, and several other representatives of British political and economic circles. On his visit to London, the Slovenian Prime Minister was accompanied by the Minister for Finance, Dr Franc Križanič, and the Minister for the Economy, Dr Matej Lahovnik. “We took this opportunity to outline the course of action the Slovenian Government has taken to tackle the financial and economic crisis,” reported Prime Minister Pahor after the meeting with his British counterpart, adding that the British side favourably assessed the action taken by the Slovenian Government to address the crisis. “Prime Minister Gordon Brown has assessed that the Slovenian economy is in good shape and that we have been dealing with the crisis appropriately,” stressed Mr Pahor.

The two Prime Ministers agreed that the global nature of the crisis requires concerted action. “It is of vital importance to find regulatory instruments in order to prevent the factors that have caused this crisis – first in the banking sector, then the financial sector, and finally the real economy – from re-emerging in the future,” stressed the Slovenian Prime Minister.

They also touched on bilateral relations between the UK and Slovenia, especially in the field of the economy. According to Mr Pahor, these relations have not been affected by the current economic crisis, and Slovenia hopes that cooperation in this field will be strengthened further in the future. The Slovenian Prime Minister took the opportunity to invite his British counterpart to visit Slovenia at the earliest opportunity.
