Prime Minister Borut Pahor visits the Municipality of Ljubljana

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, along with several ministers, today paid a visit to the Municipality of Ljubljana, where he had a meeting with Mayor Zoran Janković and his colleagues. Prime Minister Borut Pahor and Mayor Janković agreed to set up a joint commission of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia and the Municipality of Ljubljana, tasked with proposing appropriate solutions to some of the most pressing issues between the two.

“The new Government wishes to maintain some of the good practice of the previous Government’s term of office, including visits to municipalities throughout Slovenia,” stressed the Prime Minister after the meeting, adding that the Government’s aim was to familiarise itself with practical problems encountered by particular parts of the country, and to find appropriate solutions through dialogue.

Prime Minister Pahor told Mr Janković that the visit by the Government delegation to Ljubljana Town Hall should be understood as the first of a series of visits of this kind to be made throughout Slovenia over the next four years. “As the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana deserves to be given special attention, and there are also several outstanding issues,” he added. Since its election, the new Government has been striving to exchange views on current issues with respect to the capital, and has already successfully resolved some. According to Mr Pahor, certain unresolved issues do, however, require more careful consideration and a joint position.

The Prime Minister is convinced that setting up a joint commission will prove beneficial in dealing with legal issues and those related to the Government’s views on Ljubljana’s development and on its share in co-financing development. “At the Government session on Thursday, I will propose that, by 4 April 2009, the Minister without Portfolio, Responsible for Local Self-Government and Regional Development, Zlata Ploštajner, together with other ministers designated by the Government, should, at an increasing pace, propose solutions to be discussed during the visit of the Mayor's delegation to the Government,” Mr Pahor concluded.
