Prime Minister Pahor: no grounds for fear

After today's session of the Strategic Economic Council, Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor outlined the major conclusions of the Council's second session and explained that the Council now intends to meet more frequently – probably once a month. According to Prime Minister Pahor, participants at the meeting devoted special attention to the financial and economic crisis, especially measures to mitigate its negative effects, and the recent economic forecasts.

At today's session, the Strategic Economic Council established that the relevant measures taken so far had been appropriate, which, according to Prime Minister Pahor, lays a sound foundation for the future. He emphasised that in tackling the crisis, we should remain realistic.

The Council also took note of the most recent forecasts provided by the Institute of Macroeconomic Analysis and Development of the Republic of Slovenia. As elsewhere in Europe, Slovenia's economic indicators continue to deteriorate. In view of this situation, the Slovenian Prime Minister announced that the so-called crisis group of ministers would meet next week to draft new measures for grappling with financial and economic uncertainty. The group will design two pillars of measures. The first pillar will include practical measure for solving current issues, while the second will cover structural measures.

Concluding the session, Prime Minister Pahor said that he firmly believes in the Government's ability to solve the current problems and added that "in spite of the fact that the circumstances demand radical action, the Government will remain committed to social dialogue."
