Prime Minister Pahor: The conduct of the Slovenian Government has paid off on the border issue

After today’s meeting of the presidents of the parliamentary parties and the deputies of Hungarian and Italian minorities, at which the participants discussed the current situation regarding the proposal to resolve the state border issue between the Republic of Slovenia and the Republic of Croatia, the Prime Minister of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, said that Slovenia's proposal was to continue the process. "We propose the continuation of this process which has brought the two countries very close to finally resolving the state border issue. The countries have sought answers to these questions for over 18 years, so the process requires much effort and negotiation skill, prudence and finally a political consensus in both countries," he said.

Prime Minister Pahor stressed that the conduct of the Slovenian Government has paid off. "Our talks have brought us very far and it would be a pity to abandon the process at this point," he said. Slovenia's proposal is to try and find the solution acceptable to both parties and to finally resolve the state border issue.

At the same time, Mr Pahor underlined that Slovenia wishes to continue the process of Croatian negotiations for accession to the European Union and for the successful completion of the process. "We cannot forget, however, that the decision on the ratification of the accession treaty must be adopted by the National Assembly by a two-thirds majority. This is an aspect all too often overlooked," he added.
