Prime Minister Pahor receives OECD Secretary-General

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, today received the OECD Secretary-General, Angel Gurría, at Villa Podrožnik.  Mr Pahor and Mr Gurría exchanged views on Slovenia’s OECD accession process. Secretary-General Gurría commended Slovenia on its level of cooperation in OECD accession negotiations. He said that the process was running smoothly and that he anticipated no major setbacks through the end of negotiations. Prime Minister Pahor stressed that OECD membership was Slovenia’s foreign policy priority. "The Government will see to it that all the criteria are met and that negotiations are completed by the end of 2009," he added.

Secretary-General Gurría assessed the anti-crisis measures taken by Slovenia as favourable, especially those aimed at preventing a drop in employment. He said that a slowdown in economic growth in Slovenia was expected, given that Slovenia is a very open, export-oriented economy. However, he assessed Slovenia as a safe destination for foreign investment, saying that "this is very good for your country". Prime Minister Pahor said he hoped that, with membership of the organisation, Slovenia would further establish its reputation and gain the trust of the international community, which would enable Slovenian companies and banks to access financial resources in international markets more easily.
