Prime Minister Pahor: Resistance secured our freedom

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, attended a state ceremony this evening celebrating the anniversary of the restoration of the Primorska Region to the motherland and delivered an address to the guests assembled for this occasion. Mr Pahor began his speech by stressing that the people of Primorska had for no less than a quarter of a century been deprived of freedom in its most elementary sense. He particularly pointed to the unity of the local population finding its expression in the regional anthem still today, a unity not affected by any ideological, political or other differences.

"The restoration of Primorska to Slovenia and the then Yugoslavia was an extraordinary feat that could only be achieved because the Slovenian and Yugoslav side were in a position to implement, in a diplomatic confrontation, its participation in the fight against Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.

Prime Minister Pahor went on to discuss the problems faced by our country and the entire modern world, which, in order to overcome them, demanded alternative efforts. He also pointed out the issue of the final settlement of the border dispute with Croatia. "This is a serious problem, which we have not managed to solve in the past eighteen years. The proposal put forward to the respective parliaments by myself and the Croatian Prime Minister gives hope that the problem can still be resolved within a reasonable time in an equitable manner," said Mr Pahor and promised that "the government will devote its utmost attention to a successful conclusion of negotiations."
