Slovenian Prime Minister receives Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malta

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, today received the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Malta, Dr Louis Galea. They both agreed that relations between the two countries are very good, with no unresolved issues. However, in the economic area there are still a number of opportunities for closer cooperation. Mr Pahor thanked his guest for Malta's support of Slovenia's candidacy for the seat of the EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER).

During their talks, Mr Pahor and Dr Galea touched upon the issue of illegal immigration, which Malta also highlighted at the EU level as one of its major problems.  Prime Minister Pahor offered Slovenia's assistance in resolving this pressing problem and advocated action at the EU level. Mr Pahor and Dr Galea also agreed that EU enlargement is very important for the stabilisation of the Western Balkans and the provision of democracy and the rule of law in this region. Dr Galea commended Slovenia's efforts to settle the border issue with Croatia and facilitate the continuation of Croatia's EU accession negotiations. The two dignitaries concluded the meeting by emphasising the significance of the Lisbon Treaty for the future of the EU
