Prime Minister Pahor convenes meeting of presidents of parliamentary parties and deputies of national communities

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, today convened a meeting of the presidents of the parliamentary parties and deputies of the Italian and Hungarian national communities. Discussions focused on the proposal for the conclusion of an agreement on the settlement of the border dispute between Slovenia and Croatia. In his statement to the press at the end of the meeting Mr Pahor said that "this is an opportunity to finally determine the land and maritime border in an equitable manner and by way of a third party, in this case the arbitration tribunal."

Prime Minister Pahor went on to emphasise that today's meeting was of an informative nature and intended to provide the presidents of the parliamentary parties and deputies of national communities with detailed information about the development of the negotiations. "This was an informal meeting which I found very useful," said Mr Pahor, adding that today no decision on the initiative was taken, as it first had to be adopted by the Government. "According to my plan, the Government will adopt a decision this week and submit it to the Committee on Foreign Policy of the National Assembly," explained the Prime Minister.

Mr Pahor also stressed that the draft agreement had already been devised and that both States Parties had been informed of the relevant provisions prepared by the third party. "Both countries must now, according to their national legal order and through an initiative and by consent, design the content of this agreement," said Prime Minister Pahor and expressed his belief that the two countries would be successful in doing so.
