Prime Minister receives Governor General of Canada

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, today received the Governor General of Canada, Michaëlle Jean, at the Government Palace. Mr Pahor expressed his delight at the visit of Governor General Jean, who had had to cut short her working visit to Slovenia last year. He went on to say that the two countries have excellent bilateral relations, which, however, could be additionally enhanced in the economic sector, whereby new possibilities for even more dynamic cooperation should be sought.

The two dignitaries also exchanged views on the current economic and financial crisis, agreeing that one of the key objectives in combating its impact is maintaining social stability and mutual solidarity. Prime Minister Pahor emphasised the importance of social dialogue, which is fundamental to securing this stability and raising economic competitiveness. The Governor General of Canada also expressed her high expectations regarding potential cooperation, particularly in the area of science and education, and mobility of the young, whereby she agreed with Mr Pahor that investment in younger generations should be among the priority tasks.

  

During their talks, Prime Minister Pahor and Governor General Jean touched upon the current situation in Afghanistan and the problems this region is confronted with. Ms Jean pointed out that improving the situation in Afghanistan particularly requires perseverance and time.

 

At the close of the meeting, Canadian Governor General Jean thanked Prime Minister Pahor for the reception, and sincerely commended Slovenia's progress and the path the country has travelled in the eighteen years of its independence.
