Prime Minister Pahor: EU entrusted environmental policy management to Dr Janez Potočnik

On the occasion of the appointment of Dr Janez Potočnik as the new European Commissioner for the Environment, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, congratulated him sincerely and made the following statement:

"I would like to express my deep satisfaction with the decision of the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, to entrust environmental policy management to Dr Janez Potočnik, the candidate of the Slovenian Government for the post of Commissioner on the new European Commission.  This is an area of management which is legislatively strong and deals with one of the most topical issues of modern Europe and the world as a whole – environmental protection as one of pillars of sustainable development.

I am convinced that Dr Potočnik will have an excellent result in the confirmation hearings before the committee of the European Parliament and that he will perform the duties of the new European Commissioner conscientiously, professionally and with due diligence.   At the same time I expect that the newly elected European Commission will meet the high expectations of the European public.

I would like to congratulate President Barosso on his decision and wish him good luck in managing the Commission during this time of adverse economic, social and environmental conditions.  I would also like to assure Mr Barosso that he may further count on the Government of the Republic of Slovenia as an active and reliable partner."
