The Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor today in the National Assembly attended a conference entitled "Long-term Vision of Sustainable Development of Slovenia" intended for the interested public at large. By way of this conference, a group of experts seeks to establish a topical discussion on a different, comprehensible and long-term vision of Slovenia's development.

Alongside the President of the Slovenian National Assembly, Pavle Gantar, and the EU Commissioner for the Environment, Janez Potočnik, the opening speaker was also Prime Minister Pahor. He emphasised that we are living in a time of a disturbed balance, when everybody is looking for an answer as to how the new balance will look like:  "The question is whether this new balance will be established within the old paradigms, or we will witness new ones". In Mr Pahor's view, today's conference is an opportunity to find the answers to these and similar questions related to the strategic and visionary horizons that will lead us, in competing with the most developed, into the circle of the best.

"Our main guideline should be competitiveness, but not without solidarity. The Government is well aware that its basic task is to establish and strengthen the macroeconomic environment that will preserve a sustainable social environment, while also facilitating competitiveness", said Mr Pahor and also emphasised that Slovenia, in competing with the best, would neither sacrifice its social model nor its national identity. "The pillars of a sustainable development should be founded on a new development model. Therefore, it is our task to participate in the formulation and design of this global change. In doing so, however, it is fundamental to understand all dilemmas of today's world in order to be able to deal with them", concluded Prime Minister Pahor.
