Prime Minister Pahor on a working visit to Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, today visited the Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant where he was acquainted with the construction of a replacement Block 6. Within the framework of the visit, a demolition of the old cooling tower 1 of the Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant  started, which was the first among technologically out-dated and economically non profitable blocks, to be replaced by the new Block 6. The Prime Minister described the today's working visit as successful. “In my function of the Prime Minister I was informed about the Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant Block 6 Project and answers to many questions. According to the estimations, a decision for construction of the replacement Block 6 is beneficial from national and economic aspects, as well as in terms of ecology”, said Mr Pahor at the close of the meeting.

In the continuation of the visit, the management of the HSE Group informed the Prime Minister about all the advantages and details of this socially responsible Project, since this is an important form of sustainable development of the Slovenia’s largest electric power producer that generates electric power from renewable energy sources.   Without the replacement Block 6 after 2016, Slovenia would be at least twice as dependant on electric power imports than it is today and for this reason the management of the plant considers the Block 6 Project of the Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant to be one of the projects that place Slovenia in the global guidelines of strategic importance. Prime Minister Pahor was also informed that due to construction of the Block 6 of the Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant the price of the electric power in Slovenia will not increase and that the new Block will generate electric power from domestic coal from the Velenje Coal Mine. The latter represents the only energy source providing Slovenia a certain level of energy independence on a long-term basis.
