Meeting between Prime Minister Borut Pahor and Serbian President Boris Tadić

Serbian President Boris Tadić today paid a visit to Slovenia at the invitation of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor. In their statement to the press, Tadić and Pahor said that they agreed on setting up a joint railway undertaking with Croatia. They also expressed their satisfaction at the forthcoming bringing into force of the social agreement between Slovenia and Serbia. The objective of the joint railway undertaking with Croatia and Serbia is to enhance the competitive edge of the rail corridor number ten. “It involves the alliance and the joint undertaking Cargo 10”, said Mr Pahor after the meeting. Serbian President Tadić highlighted the importance of bringing into force the social agreement that would resolve longstanding problems of citizens of the two countries, allowing them to receive their earned pensions and other rights if they had worked in another country.

At today’s meeting, Prime Minister Borut Pahor also offered Slovenia’s help in resolving the open issues between Serbia and Kosovo. “If President Tadić believes that Slovenia can be of any help in this issue, we will be pleased to be of assistance,” emphasized the Prime Minister, at the same time calling attention to the importance of a dialogue between Belgrade and Priština. “I may say that it is in the interest of Serbia, EU Member States and international community that the text of the resolution is written in a manner acceptable for everybody,” added the Prime Minister Pahor and pointed out that important open issues faced by South-East Europe cannot be resolved in a moment or by a single conference. “Probably a small step will be needed, to be followed by several longer and more ambitious steps in order to reach more permanent solutions.”

Serbian President Boris Tadić said that Serbia wants to “solve the Kosovo issue in agreement with its European partners while defending its legitimate interests, and in the light of the European perspective not only of Serbia but also of the Albanian nation." Currently, Serbia is facing a serious challenge, i.e. the harmonisation of the text that might be tabled before the General Assembly of the United Nations, the text that protects Serbia's legitimate interests concerning the Kosovo issue«, added the President Tadić.
