Prime Borut Pahor: »Proposals aimed at eliminating the damage caused by the floods are to be prepared urgently«

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia today called a meeting of the responsible ministers, where they agreed upon the measures to be taken with a view to eliminating the damage caused by the recent floods.  The meeting was also attended by Miran Bogataj, the Republic of Slovenia Civil Protection Commander. According to Prime Minister’s statement after the meeting, the responsible ministers are expected to prepare the reports and proposals for measures to be taken with a view to eliminating the damage caused by the floods.

Relevant reports are to be drawn up by the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning and the Ministry of Economy. »First of all, it is necessary to provide help to the people in need and gather relevant information on where such help may be needed«, said Prime Minister Pahor and added that »the Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Affairs was assigned the task to provide assistance via the social work centres to those who asked for it«. In addition, the Government is in constant touch with Mayors of those municipalities that were most badly hit by the disaster. Together they have to agree on how to distribute the offered assistance. Following the elimination of direct disaster impact and the restoration of former conditions, certain activities in the environment will have to be carried out in order to prevent further floods of the kind. »Such accidents should not pass into oblivion when the consequences are remedied«, stressed the Prime Minister. Over the recent days, the Government did everything it could and is determined to do so also in future. Prime Minister Pahor qualified the response by the volunteers, firemen, policemen and others who took part in the protection and rescue measures as a fast, effective and professional one and added that »thanks to them, less damage has been sustained than otherwise would have been«.
