The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, today held talks with the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga, who is on a two-day working visit to Slovenia. Cooperation between Slovenia and Kosovo is marked with traditionally good relations that are based on mutual trust and not burdened with any open issues. According to the Prime Minister, the Slovenian Government supports the Republic of Kosovo in its endeavours to gain further international recognition and forge closer ties with the European Union.

Mr Pahor and his guest also discussed economic cooperation between the two countries that has increased considerably in recent years with Slovenia remaining Kosovo’s key economic partner. Slovenian companies and products are well known and popular in Kosovo. The dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina is, in his opinion, positive as it represents Kosovo’s initial steps towards resolving political problems with the Republic of Serbia.  Mr Pahor went on to stress the significance of the Brdo process as an initiative for political dialogue.

For Kosovo’s President, Atifete Jahjaga, the visit to Slovenia carries special weight since it is her first bilateral visit abroad and Kosovo plans to open an honorary consulate in Slovenia. Slovenia will continue to foster cooperation with Kosovo in the field of development cooperation along with technical assistance, in particular within Kosovo’s European integration process because, as mentioned by Mr Pahor, the future of Kosovo is in the European Union: 'This is the only way to achieve economic stability and security in Kosovo and the wider region. It will make the Eastern Balkans an attractive region for the European Union.'
