New Year's Address by Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia Borut Pahor

Dear fellow Slovenians,
Dear citizens,

The world around us is changing rapidly, while Slovenia is at a standstill. Its state administration has been functioning with limited powers for three months now. Maintaining such a situation poses a serious threat to the vital interests of our country. However, following the election of the new Parliament, our expectations for the swift formation of a new government seem justified. Dealing with the financial, economic, social and other problems that have accumulated is long overdue. Moreover, domestic and international circumstances are just starting to give rise to some fresh dilemmas that await consideration by the new prime minister.

My knowledge, experience and intuition lead me to believe that our shared European home will take a sharp historical turn in the future. It is very important to know whether we can stay on track or very strong tensions may lead to unforeseeable complications.

In this respect, Slovenia is still the master of its own destiny. However, neither Slovenian nor European past successes can be seen as self-evident; anything that eventually leads to improved justice, to the increased worthiness (of man), greater security and to more democracy will require common effort and understanding. Slovenia has that potential. Beside its natural beauties, Slovenia's only asset is its people, who are diligent, honest and resourceful in character. Along with the reputation our country enjoys in the world, this asset enables us to take self-confident and ambitious decisions concerning its present and its future.

We need each other. Let us respect each other.
Let us encourage each other.

It is amazing how much good we can do.
Each and every one of us.
We will make it.

My best wishes for the new year.

Borut Pahor
Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia
