Dear Athletes,

Today's opening ceremony will inaugurate the 30th Summer Olympic Games in London, which is where the best athletes will compete – those whose achievements have demonstrated the truth of the statement that only through hard work can one become the best. Day by day, year by year, putting aside everything else, only one thing is important: to overcome one's limitations, and improve through perseverance and determination.

I know that you have invested years of hard work, training and self-sacrifice in order to represent your country at the Olympics. Even at times when things were tough and nobody believed you could succeed, it is a testament to your commitment, endurance and fighting spirit that you grew stronger regardless. Today you are a part of the Olympic team, the pinnacle of achievement, for which I would like to express my sincere congratulations.

The slogan of this year's Olympic Games is 'Inspire a Generation'. Your life and sporting achievements have inspired a number of young athletes whose dream is to join the global sports elite some day. You are an inspiration to all Slovenia's citizens, who will be reminded on each day of the Games how important it is to set goals in life, to believe in these goals, and to work hard in order to achieve them.

Your hard work and dreams will be the focus of the world's attention in the coming days. I wish you great success in your endeavours and hope you achieve your goals. We will all share in the joy of your success. Let the Slovenian national anthem be heard in London as many times as possible.

Slovenia is and will always be proud of you.
