The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, attended the European Council meeting in Brussels where European political leaders met again. The meeting’s main focus was on the alignment of positions and the enhanced functioning of the EU economic and financial framework.

In his statement to the press, Prime Minister Janša emphasised that a number of countries in the euro area faced difficulties, which calls for rapid decisions; to this end, the Council meeting is to set guidelines for decision-making at the December meeting.   Referring to the idea of the EU budget, the Prime Minister said that the EU did not need it as it already had one.  He added that the EU had one single currency and one budget and saw no point in duplicating the institutions. Another major topic to be discussed at the meeting is the already adopted growth and employment pact providing the basis to further strengthen the EU competitiveness.

Before attending the EU Council, the Prime Minister participated  in the Congress of the European People's Party (EPP) in Bucharest, where the summit of the largest political grouping in the European Parliament passed  a resolution on responsibility and protection in genocide prevention based on an initiative by Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia Janez Janša; this is a new step towards the implementation of the initiative to upgrade the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
