In the rush of modern society we no longer seem to take time off for ourselves. We are overcome by a wave of nostalgia when we listen to our parents speaking of events and habits from our childhood. Family moments used to be the most precious ones. Traditional Slovenian breakfast with freshly baked bread, walnuts and apples just picked in the orchard, and home-made honey was definitely such an occasion.

Given all these fond memories, it only stands to reason to take lessons from them. As we pay more attention to the protection of health and the environment, food is becoming an increasingly valuable commodity. In the light of this, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia at the initiative of the Slovenian Beekeepers' Association proclaimed 16 November as the Slovenian Food Day. Children in kindergartens and primary schools will taste locally produced food to mark this day dedicated to Slovenian food. For the first time, the Children's Hospital in Ljubljana will also be included in this promotional campaign.

The aim of the project is to highlight the importance of a healthy diet and quality lifestyle as well as to raise awareness about food self-sufficiency among the local population and the general public. In Slovenia, home production, unfortunately, does not meet the demand for agricultural produce and foodstuffs, which in turn increases the importance of local supply.

Sustainable use of land for food production and the creation of new jobs in rural areas count among the Government's objectives. High quality local produce will also improve food safety. With their love of the land, Slovenian farmers provide consumers with high quality and fresh food. Food that helps us stay healthy and vital.

An old saying has it that morning shows the day. Let us start the day with delicious traditional Slovenian breakfast!
