Prime Minister Janez Janša: "The Constitutional Court defends the welfare of the people"

"We welcome the Constitutional Court’s ruling as the bulwark of Slovenia’s economic and political sovereignty," the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, hailed today's ruling of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia that referenda on the Slovenian Sovereign Holding Act and the Act Regulating Measures to Strengthen the Stability of Banks would be unconstitutional.

"The Constitutional Court defends the welfare of the people, which is at risk due to blockades. The greater the blockades, the less money will be available, and eventually less money can be allocated to the most urgent cases," the Prime Minister said. He also added that today Slovenia is not in a position to afford that each law would first go through difficult harmonisation within the coalition, then through lengthy procedures in the National Assembly, next through the attempts to be brought into line with the opposition, and through vetoes that are, as a rule, used by the National Council, and in the end through the referendum initiatives. "This would take six months of our time, which we, unfortunately, do not have. If it were 2009, we could talk about this alternative. However, at the end of 2012, we are in the situation in which this luxury cannot be afforded even if we see the light at the end of the tunnel - but the way to get there is long."
