“Each nation, as well as each individual, faces severe ordeals in life. The times in which we live now are such times,” said Prime Minister Janez Janša as a speaker of honour at the state ceremony on the Independence and Unity Day.

The Prime Minister recalled that we have achieved enviable results in our short history, but that we have overlooked many an aspect in our ardour of success. If we could unite at the onset of crisis and adapt the public expenditure, more would be left for investments and new jobs.

The Prime Minister sees the protests, the freedom of speech and public gathering as the rights we fought for twenty-two years ago. He said: “Each person who does this with a Slovenian flag in his or her hands should be respected, as he or she is an active citizen. This is about Slovenia. About Slovenia as a part of the common European future.”

“There is no reason for pessimism. We have our problems, but we will overcome them,” is an optimistic attitude of Prime Minister Janša. Slovenia was not founded in order to make living worse. “Nobody voted for the independence of Slovenia for these reasons. All of us deserve more. Therefore we are committed to work for the benefit of all our citizens,” said the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister, acting on behalf of the Government, accepted the invitation of the new president of Slovenia, Mr Borut Pahor, who expressed in his speech the willingness to unite all political groups in Slovenia. Mr Janša promised the new President of the Republic that the government’s door will always remain open to him.
