The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, today met with leading figures in the Slovenian economy, members of the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and members of the Manager's Association of Slovenia. The meeting's participants discussed proposals and views on further developing the competitiveness of the domestic economy and the measures aimed at balancing the public finances and giving new impetus to the economy.

In his statement to the media, the Prime Minister emphasised that the Government and the corporate sector shared the view that the early incorporation of the golden rule into the Constitution was of vital importance, and that it would have direct positive impact on the economy. In the Prime Minister's words, the measures necessary to boost economic recovery in the coming months were clearly outlined during the meeting. On this occasion, the Prime Minister pointed out that "the so-called cost-cutting or streamlining measures in the public sector constitute just 10% of what needs to be done during this Government's term of office in order for Slovenia to become an attractive place to do business, to experience economic growth, and, on this basis, to be able to finance all the public sector needs or even more, when it is about ensuring the normal functioning of our society in general".

In his words, the Slovenian corporate sector had paid a high price during the last three years of the crisis; nonetheless, the meeting was permeated with a rather high dose of optimism as a result of a fact that the Slovenian economy managed to clean and renew itself during the crisis, as well as to prepare and adapt to a more difficult situation.

In addition, the Prime Minister said that the cost-cutting measures planned should also be considered from a social justice perspective, since, according to the national Constitution, we are all equal before the law. "As to exiting the crisis, there are justified expectations for everyone to tighten their belts," the Prime Minister added.
