The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, today sent a letter of condolence to the family of the late poet, translator and editor Ivan Minatti, in which he – on his behalf and on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia – expressed his profound sympathies over the irreplaceable loss.

The Prime Minister wrote that the rich opus of Ivan Minatti's life and art was a field blossoming with sensibility, love and intimistic insight into human distress, fears and anxiety. "His understanding of the greatness of nature and society, and his awareness that 'you must love someone' offered Slovenians a way to seek amity and sincere unity," the Prime Minister wrote. He stressed that the Slovenian poet and translator Ivan Minatti had received the most prestigious awards for his work – some even referred to him as "the doyen of Slovenian poetry" – and that his creativity had left an indelible mark in the hearts of many.

"The passing of Ivan Minatti constitutes a loss of a great poet and translator who was able to capture the depth of the human soul in simple words. He permanently enriched the Slovenian cultural treasury, and his artistic opus will continue to shine strongly and majestically at the Parnassus of Slovenian poetry," the Prime Minister added.
