The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, today paid a working visit to the the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg where he met with his host, the Prime Minister of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and President of the Eurogroup, Jean-Claude Juncker.

In his statement to the press after the meeting, Prime Minister Janša stressed that the economic and financial situation in Slovenia and in the eurozone was serious and that Slovenia was not the only state which was forced to implement reforms and to adopt measures required to overcome the crisis. »Slovenia missed many opportunities in recent years and now it has to take important steps in the shortest time possible.  We must continue with reducing budget deficits and the Government is determined to take these steps through budget proposals for 2013 and 2014,” explained Prime Minister Janez Janša.

He went on to emphasise that the most important short-term measure to be taken to exit from the crisis and restore economic growth is stabilisation of the banking sector by which the government coalition will take the necessary measures to start this process in this and next months.  »The third step will be structural reforms in the labour market and pension system. In this context, the Government also proposed measures, we are in the process of negotiation with social partners and the opposition; these two structural measures will be adopted in accordance with our plan and pursued by the beginning of next year,” said Slovenia’s Prime Minister.

At the occasion of the today's working visit, Eurogroup President Jean-Claude Juncker expressed his support to the Government of the Republic of Slovenia and underlined that the reforms proposed by the Government were headed in the right direction. According to Mr Juncker, they are of significant importance to Slovenia and the entire eurozone. Eurogroup President also assessed that Slovenia would achieve the set objectives.
