The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Alenka Bratušek, today received the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, with whom she exchanged views on the current process of overcoming the crisis in Europe and measures to strengthen the economy and employment in the Member States. They also discussed the upcoming elections to the European Parliament and the situation in Ukraine, which will be an important theme of the March European Council meeting next week.

The Prime Minister and her guest agreed that fiscal consolidation should continue, but that the measures aimed at boosting the growth should be focused primarily on increasing the competitiveness of the economy and employment, especially of young people. In this context, preserving the social state is crucial.

The President of the European Parliament congratulated the Prime Minister on the achievements of her Government in the past year. He said he was aware that within a short time, a great deal of effort was put into making progress. He also pointed out two resolutions on the working of the Troika, adopted by the European Parliament by a large majority yesterday. The resolutions, inter alia, point out the Troika's lack of sensitivity towards the specific features of each Member State and stress that in the process of achieving the financial goals, the social goals were endangered.
