Prime Minister meets with representatives of the Roma community

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Alenka Bratušek, met with the representatives of the Roma community before World Roma Day. During the talks, the Prime Minister said that Slovenia had been making every effort to improve the situation of the Roma people since its independence by taking special measures and the national strategy. She emphasised that Slovenia was one of the few countries where the status of the Roma community was legally regulated.  They all agreed that compared to other countries, the situation of the Roma in Slovenia was good and that there were still many opportunities to make progress.

 

The representatives of the Roma community addressed the most burning issues of housing conditions, education and employment of Roma, stressing, in this regard, that efforts should be made to restrict hate speech and discrimination. Special attention was also paid to the drawing on European funds where the quality of cooperation among users of the European funds and bodies responsible for the preparation of tenders for their allocation is of vital importance.

 

Additionally, all present agreed that cooperation and dialogue were the two words which had to describe the relations between the Roma community, local and state authorities. The Prime Minister expressed her wish to continue to work hand in hand and solve any problems through cooperation.
