The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Alenka Bratušek, had a meeting today with the President of the European Central Bank (EIB), Werner Hoyer. In a statement to the media, Ms Bratušek thanked Mr Hoyer for the visit and his readiness to hold talks, adding that Slovenia and the EIB are linked by the many projects they have carried out together and that talks are underway on new projects and forms of cooperation. She went on to explain that, in her view, the cooperation between Slovenia and the EIB in the past could have been better: "Slovenia has yet to undertake a number of changes for the better, and I am pleased that we have all agreed today that cooperation between Slovenia and the EIB should be strengthened and intensified, in particular through the Slovenian Export and Development Bank, SID."

The Prime Minister stressed that she particularly welcomed the agreement reached today and the EIB’s readiness to dispatch two to three experts to Slovenia to provide technical assistance in implementing cooperation between the EIB and SID. "Cooperation with the EIB is of immense importance to Slovenia and its economy in a time when public funds are limited, and therefore I would like to thank Mr Hoyer once again for the visit and talks," she added.

The EIB President explained that since the early 1990s, the cooperation between Slovenia and the EIB had been very good and without parallel in Europe. Slovenia is also the largest beneficiary of EIB loans per capita.  He assessed that there was a clear determination by Slovenian authorities to tackle the banking sector diligently and expeditiously and secure a greater variety of banking partners in Slovenia.
