Prime Minister Janez Janša: We must make every possible effort to find a solution

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, is at the meeting of the European Council, now in its second day in Brussels. On the agenda is a solution to the outstanding issue of institutional reform, which the EU has been facing for some time.

Before the new, evening round of negotiations, the Slovenian PM stressed that the negotiations were continuing and that the number of officially outstanding issues was unchanged so far. Most of the coordination and search for compromise centres on two member states – the UK and Poland – as they will determine the length and form of the conference and the compromise.

"However, the number of outstanding issues on the one hand, and of solutions transferred from the former constitutional treaty, which has been coordinated and signed, and also ratified in many countries, lead us to believe that we will reach a good compromise," said Mr Janša. According to the PM, we would thus keep a large majority of key decisions, which enable Europe to take major steps forward, while leaving space to find intermediary solutions or to implement some decisions with delay. The PM stressed that every effort is being made to find a solution.
