The meeting in Lisbon, which follows the first one in Cairo from 2000, is aimed at putting the relations between the two continents on a more equal footing, surpass the traditional relations between donors and aid receivers, and establish strategic partnership.

In addition to the Lisbon Declaration, which is a political commitment, the leaders of over 80 delegations from Europe and Africa will adopt two other documents with clearly defined goals: the EU-Africa Joint Strategy and an Action Plan to implement the Strategy. Prime Minister Janez Janša, accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Dimitrij Rupel, will address the leaders at the first plenary session. Against the backdrop of the Summit the PM will meet several African and EU leaders individually.
