Prime Minister Janez Janša pronounces 500th anniversary of the birth of Primož Trubar one of the most important Slovenian anniversaries

Today in Ljubljana, Mr Janez Janša, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, attended the first session of the honorary committee established on 28 November 2007 by the Slovenian Government to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Primož Trubar.

The Prime Minister observed on this occasion that he was pleased that the Slovene language – one of whose founding fathers was Primož Trubar, consolidator of the language – was now placed on an equal footing with other official languages in the European Union. It bears out the truth of Trubar’s famous saying, “to stand and withstand”. The Slovene language has not just stood but has also withstood, said Mr Jansa, and it is therefore our responsibility to take care of its development and ensure that it is used. He noted that the 500th anniversary of the birth of Primož Trubar is one of the most important anniversaries celebrated by Slovenia and the Slovene people. “The debate within the honorary committee has shown that, in Slovenia, views of the importance of Primož Trubar are very unified,” said the Prime Minister, and pointed out that the Government of the Republic of Slovenia had declared 2008 the Year of Primož Trubar.
