The gala concert, held on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Slovenian Philharmonic, effectively served as a preamble to the spring European Council meeting, which is to be chaired by the Slovenian Prime Minister, Janez Janša. Mr Janša assessed the evening’s concert as a first-rate event, adding that he was pleased to see Slovenian culture being promoted at the heart of Europe. He hoped as many similar concerts as possible would be held in cities throughout Europe and the world.

The Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of maestro George Pehlivanian, performed Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No 2 in C minor, the “Resurrection”. The composer actually began his artistic career in Ljubljana as the conductor of the then Stanovsko gledališče (Estate Theatre). The concert featured the soloists, soprano Sabina Cvilak and mezzosoprano Bernarda Fink as well as the Slovenian Chamber Choir and the Consortium Musicum choir.
