European Union aware of need for progress in climate change, says Prime Minister Janez Janša

Representatives of the non-governmental environmental organisation Greenpeace in Slovenia today presented the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia and current President of the European Council, Mr Janez Janša, with a petition in connection with the negotiations under way in the European Union on climate change, in which they voiced concern over attempts by Germany and France to water down the proposals for reducing CO2 emissions from motor vehicles in the European Union. They also expressed support for Slovenia and the Slovenian Presidency “in its presentation of the long-term goal of reducing CO2 emissions from cars.”

Thanking them for the petition, the Prime Minister stressed that it was a good initiative. He said that the Slovenian Presidency was striving for steps to be taken forward in this area too. “It is a very demanding issue and, for issues of this kind, consensus is required - and that takes longer,” commented the Prime Minister. He added that the great majority of EU Member States agreed that progress should be made in the negotiations. “If we fail to make progress during our Presidency, pressure will mount. I believe that we will reach an agreement that will certainly be a compromise and a step forward.”
