The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia and current President of the European Council, Mr Janez Janša, today received the President of Ukraine, Mr Viktor Yushchenko, who is currently visiting Slovenia.

Prime Minister Janša and President Yushchenko took the opportunity to welcome the friendly bilateral relations and the intensification of economic cooperation, reflected in particular in a sizeable increase in trade between the two countries, and advocated building on these excellent relations in other areas, too. PM Janez Janša congratulated Mr Yushchenko on Ukraine’s joining the World Trade Organization recently, this being an important step towards the country’s development and prosperity.

The two leaders focused on relations between the European Union and Ukraine. The Ukrainian President thanked Slovenia for its support for Ukraine’s endeavours to join the EU; the Slovenian Prime Minister, in turn, promised Slovenia’s further support to Ukraine in its endeavours to join the Euro-Atlantic groupings.
