Statement by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, on the Referendum on the Independence of Montenegro

The Republic of Slovenia commends the fair and correct conduct of the referendum on the independence of Montenegro. It is important that a large majority of voters expressed their will in a fair and democratic procedure. What they opted for is clear, and therefore all sides have the responsibility to respect the voters' will and contribute to its realisation.

Slovenia wishes that all parties in Serbia and Montenegro strive for the implementation of the referendum results which will not create additional tensions. By becoming independent, Montenegro will assume sovereignty and, consequently, responsibility for all its citizens, while in the process of transferring competences Serbia will be its natural partner. It is therefore imperative that both sides engage in mutually constructive dialogue, and define the guidelines for a friendly cohabitation as soon as possible.

This is particularly important in the time when both countries not only share a common past, but must also ensure a better future for its citizens. They should continue to endeavour to enter Euroatlantic structures. Slovenia wishes to continue fruitful collaboration with both Serbia and Montenegro and will, therefore, continue to offer support to both countries.
