Prime Minister Janez Janša: Unilateral interventions at Hotiza are unacceptable

Today, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, joined a climb on Mt Triglav, where he attended the Vrh na vrhu ('Summit on the Summit') event and also commented on current developments at Hotiza. He emphasised that until an agreement on the border between Slovenia and Croatia is reached, any unilateral actions that affect the current situation were unacceptable.

The PM said that the current state of affairs in force was the same as that of 25 June 1991, as the two countries have not yet reached a border agreement on this particular area. The embankment that was built and has been maintained by Slovenia definitely needs to be renovated; however, according to the PM, the countries have failed to agree on how to do this even after several months of negotiations. "Slovenia proposed a joint restoration project, but Croatia started work unilaterally, without a preliminary agreement, which prompted Slovenia to reply," stressed the Slovenian PM.

Mr Janša has discussed this issue on several occasion with the Croatian PM, Ivo Sanader; however, there has not yet been a summit meeting due to differences in views. The Slovenian PM expressed the hope that these would soon be reconciled, particularly with reference to respecting the Agreement to Avoid Incidents signed on Brioni, and eventually to be endorsed at the highest level. "Everything rests on diplomatic activities; I sincerely hope these will be successful," concluded Mr Janša.
