Response to Human Rights Ombudsman regarding relocation of the Roma

It is unreasonable and irresponsible that the Human Rights Ombudsman, Mr Matjaž Hanžek, in whose opinion the agreed temporary relocation of Romanies from Ambrus to the Aliens Centre in Postojna  means the end of the rule of law, has reported Slovenia to the Council of Europe.

The temporary accommodation in the centre in Postojna has been agreed with Romanies as well as with the local population. Mr Hanžek has, to date, offered no better solution. This problem has existed for a number of years without Mr Hanžek contributing anything to its solution. The Government of the Republic of Slovenia and its ministries are putting every effort in finding a suitable location, indeed chosen in agreement with the representatives of the Romany community.

The conduct of the Human Rights Ombudsman is regrettable since it unjustly damages the reputation of the Republic of Slovenia in international institutions. Slovenia has made available substantial funds to improve the living conditions of the Romanies and for their social integration. Many efforts have gone into the acquisition of their professional qualifications and the integration of Romany children in the education system. The Government of the Republic of Slovenia will shortly discuss a law proposal on special rights of the Romany community, and submit it to the National Assembly.
