Prime Minister Janez Janša: Interaction among the young of the world is a true added value of the Universiade

Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia Janez Janša today received representatives of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Commission who will assess during their visit the readiness of Slovenia to organise the Winter Universiade in 2011. On this occasion, Prime Minister Janša emphasised the great importance that the Government of the Republic of Slovenia attributed to the candidature of the city of Maribor and its surrounding area in hosting this event and expressed support for the preparatory committee in its work on the candidature.

The Prime Minister availed himself of this opportunity to highlight arguments that could benefit Maribor’s candidature. Among others, he mentioned that Slovenia’s long tradition in winter sports, as well as the traditional hospitality manifested when organising sports and other events, would  make Slovenia a good choice in hosting this largest sports event on the university level.

Slovenia is aware that such competitions continue to grow in importance, not just as sports events, but also as an element binding youth from all over this world. “Bringing together young people of different cultural backgrounds from the whole world is the real value of this project,” added Prime Minister Janša.

The representatives of the International University Sports Federation Commission agreed that the interlinking role of sports among young people is their very special quality that needs to be nurtured. Participation in sports on this level complements the educational process and thus contributes to a higher quality of university studies.
