Government intervention calms the tense situation in Suha Krajina

On Saturday evening and during the night the Prime Minister, Janez Janša, and education, internal and environment ministers – Milan Zver, Dragutin Mate and Janez Podobnik, respectively – met representatives of the municipality of Ivančna gorica, Ambrus L ocal Authority, and the Strojan family and some Roma councillors. All appealed for respect for the rule of law and for calm in the current tense situation. Road blocks were subsequently removed and police special forces were withdrawn from the Suha Krajina region.

After discussions, representatives of the Strojan family accepted the regulations which stipulate that, due to executable acts of the inspection services, and a final judgement of the Administrative Court in 2002, the legalisation of their former settlement near Ambrus is not possible. They decided to return to Postojna for a short period, before spending the winter in a government-owned building in Slovenia, where they will have normal living conditions, and their children will be able to go to school. In the meantime, the competent government authorities will assist them in finding a replacement for their plot near Ambrus, which is classified as agricultural land, in the form of suitable building land or legal accommodation facility, and help them to establish lawful and permanent residence.
