Before the meeting, Mr Janša attended the Summit of the European People’s Party and expressed his expectation that at this European Council meeting positions on further enlargement would be adopted in principle, and decisions would be taken on migrations, in particular concerning the commitment of the European Council to formulate and implement a common migration policy by 2010.

During the discussion in the first part of the meeting, Mr Janša highlighted a decision recently adopted by the EU25 on the entry of new member states into the Schengen Information System and he also took the opportunity to thank the European Commission and Portugal for their efforts in seeking consensus since a decision on this issue is important both for Slovenia and the security of the European Union as a whole.
