Prime Minister Janez Janša Proposes a New Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food

Today 14 February 2007, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, proposed that the National Assembly appoint the former State Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food for the period 2001-2004, Mr Iztok Jarc as the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food.

Among the reasons the PM Janez Janša gave for his decision is Mr Jarc’s wide experience in the field of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing, stressing his profound knowledge of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy and of Slovenian agriculture in general. The experience he has gained as State Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food, as a negotiator on agriculture issues relating to Slovenia’s EU membership, and prior to that, his work for the Slovenian Representation to the EU in Brussels, will be particularly valuable during the preparation period for and, especially, during Slovenia’s presidency of the EU.

Upon submitting his nomination to the National Assembly, the PM also said that, due to the candidate’s rich experience and knowledge, should he be appointed, the transition period in the Ministry would be as short as possible, which is important, as in the second half of the Government’s term, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food will face particularly demanding and responsible tasks.

Mr Jarc will present his views regarding the state of agriculture in Slovenia and the EU, first to the competent Parliamentary Committee, and then to the general public.
