Prime Minister Janez Janša meets senior officials of the European Commission

Today, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, met João Vale de Almedia, Head of the Cabinet of the President of the European Commission, and Catherine Day, Secretary-General of the European Commission. The discussion focused on Slovenia's preparations for the EU presidency in the first half of 2008.

The PM outlined the progress of preparations, focusing on Slovenia's priority issues: institutional reform, energy, climate change, intercultural dialogue, the Western Balkans, and the Lisbon Strategy.

The main topic of discussion was the upcoming inter-governmental conference on the so-called 'Reform Treaty'. Slovenia hopes the Treaty will be signed during the Portuguese Presidency, so that there will be enough time for its ratification by all member states. Slovenia will closely follow the ratification process in member states. A timely agreement would enable it to devote more energy to other EU priorities.
