Prime Minister Janez Janša meets the Slovenian community in New York

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, who has been attending the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly, today met representatives of New York's Slovenian community. To mark the occasion, a short cultural programme was held in the Slovenian Church of St. Cyril in Manhattan.

In his address, the Slovenian PM recalled the role of Slovenes from New York and the surrounding areas during Slovenia's struggle for independence, and their all-out efforts to secure international recognition for the country. "Slovenia was very grateful to you back then, and is also grateful to you today. I extend sincere thanks to you on behalf of the Slovenian Government," said PM. "Slovenia is becoming more and more aware that you, compatriots – all of whom still feel their Slovenian roots regardless of where they live – are a great treasure. This is why, last year, the Slovenian Parliament finally passed an act on Slovenes living abroad," continued the PM, adding that the act has created a link between everyone living around the world and their homeland.

PM Janez Janša also visited Ground Zero, where the twin towers of the WTC stood until they were destroyed in the terrorist attacks against the USA on 9 September 2001, and a centre commemorating the tragic event, where he signed the book of remembrance. The PM said on this occasion that 11 September 2001 was a day that had changed the way war and peace are perceived in the eyes of the world. "We share the pain with all who lost their loved ones here. We are doing everything we can so that an event like this will never happen again anywhere in the world," said PM Janez Janša.
