Prime Minister Janez Janša: Social agreement reflects the maturity and efficiency of social dialogue

Today, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, attended the signing ceremony of the Social Agreement for the period 2007-2009, signed on behalf of the Republic of Slovenia by the Minister of Labour, Family and Social Affairs, Marjeta Cotman.

In his speech, the PM said that the Social Agreement signed today creates the widest framework of social development for the next two years. Demands on the Government make up two thirds of all commitments made. "However, we are signing this conscientiously and with the intention of keeping the promises we have made," said the PM, adding that the biggest requirement imposed on the Government is to cut public spending. "The budgetary document referred to the National Assembly a few days ago will fulfil this commitment," said the PM.

The PM also stressed that economic growth and rising employment contribute to lowering expenditure to cover the losses of the pension fund. "2008 is the first year in the history of independent Slovenia to significantly cut this expenditure and we expect this trend to continue in 2009." At the same time, Slovenia has seen an increase in population and birth rate last year. The more favourable environment is also important for the issue of wages policy, which has to successfully address inflation, while maintaining a favourable macro-economic environment for further economic growth and development.

The PM said that signing the Social Agreement reflects the maturity and efficiency of social dialogue in Slovenia. "I am glad Slovenia is getting a document which is the result of social dialogue and communication, on the basis of which we will be able to successfully upgrade what we have achieved. The end result is good and I believe this is your joint victory."
