The Prime Minister promised his support in seeking possible ways to enable the National Council to be involved at an earlier stage in the legislative procedure in future. The President of the National Council, Mr Blaž Kavčič, in this context advocated that the National Council also be enabled to propose amendments.

PM Janša and Mr Kavčič devoted special attention to the future role of the National Council, both agreeing that the way should be opened for this to be discussed.  Mr Janša expressed the view that, with the Government in the last year of its term of office and Slovenia engaged with its EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2008, radical changes that constitutionally would require a two-thirds majority in this area should not be anticipated. Mr Kavčič gave assurances that the National Council would participate constructively in any such discussions with a view to finding the best possible solutions.
