Prime Minister Janez Janša emphasised that the outcome of the Serbian presidential elections should also be understood as the reflection of the wishes and resolve of democratic forces to further Serbia on its path towards membership of the European Union. Mr Janša expressed his firm belief that Serbia would very soon succeed in meeting the criteria required in order to proceed along this path. By inviting Serbia to sign a Political Agreement recently, the European Union had given a clear message that it counted on a European Serbia, which would, as a factor of stability and good cooperation in the region, soon be set to take the next steps towards full integration into Europe. Prime Minister Janez Janša assured Serbian President Boris Tadić that Serbia could continue to count on Slovenia’s support in this regard. He also expressed his wish to see the comprehensive ties between the two countries strengthened further.

The Slovenian Presidency also responded to the results of the presidential elections in Serbia with a statement.
