Prime Minister Janez Janša regrets that there are not more therapeutic communities for drug addicts

Prime Minister Janez Janša this afternoon commenced the government’s return visit to the Posavje region with a visit to “Skupnost srečanje” (‘Encounter’ Community), a therapeutic community for drug addicts in Razbor in the municipality of Sevnica. The team of ministers first visited the municipalities of the Posavje region in March 2006; the purpose of their visit today was to check up on the implementation of the matters agreed two years ago and to assess new opportunities for development in the region.

After visiting the therapeutic community, which began operating in 1995 and which is currently home to four young women with problems of addiction to illicit drugs, the Prime Minister highlighted it as a model of good practice in tackling drug addiction. “Here, the young women have found the path to a new life. A path on which they will learn how to take a responsible attitude both towards the world and towards themselves,” he stressed. He regretted that there were not more therapeutic communities or places like Razbor, which are willing to accept such communities. “We have heard local people saying that there were no problems with this community and that, on the contrary, a community of this kind is a source of enrichment for the locality, something they are happy with. And when the young women leave at the end of the programme, practically everyone is in tears,” was PM Janša’s vivid description.

The Prime Minister also informed the journalists present of the extensive investigation being carried out today by the police and the prosecutor’s office in the area of economic crime. Mr Janša pointed out that he was not familiar with the details of the investigation and therefore would not comment on it. However, he said he hoped that it would have a preventive effect. He added, moreover, that he had every confidence that the police and the prosecutor’s office would carry out their duties in a responsible and lawful fashion. In his opinion, both institutions are now, after a period of consolidation and training, capable of combating organised crime more effectively. Asked by journalists whether the investigation was related to tycoons and the anti-tycoon campaign, Mr Janša answered that it had originally been planned a long time ago last year. He considered it an operation which would have a preventive effect in Slovenia in the future too.
