I myself and the Slovenian Government are deeply saddened today by the news of the death of Dr Janez Drnovšek. Dr Drnovšek was one of the Slovenes who have profoundly marked Slovenia’s life in the past twenty years. He helped create the Slovenian state and contributed greatly to what today are our foundations.

I recall his role during Slovenia's process of independence; his invaluable contribution at the time Slovenia was joining the European Union and NATO; I also recall his decision to start the talks on Slovenia’s future. These are some of the major landmarks in Slovenia’s history, on which Dr Janez Drnovšek left his indelible imprint. 

 

His achievements will be remembered by our generation as well as by future generations.
